CNS e-mail, computer accounts

• Computer account: Ask a friend to forward your account request to the person in charge of the system, specifying the desired userID. Your email address on cns cluster is userID@cns.physics.gatech.edu , and you will be able to log onto any CNS linux machine as userID. Only secure shell is accepted for external logins:
  
  
  ssh gtID@ssh.physics.gatech.edu

  This gets you inside the School of Physics firewall. If you have a linux account on zero, your filesystem is NSF mounted on ssh.physics, so you can work directly on your files. However, probably the best next step is to then

  ssh userID@zero.physics.gatech.edu

  That gives you access to your email on cns network. If you instead

  ssh userID@yourComputer.physics.gatech.edu

  you also have access to your own Linux box's hard disk /scr/userID partition.

• Important: Make sure that the address one gets when replying to your email is userID@cns.physics.gatech.edu . For instance, if you are using pine, set variable user-domain in Setup/Config to cns.physics.gatech.edu

• e-mail account: If you employed by Georgia Tech for a longer stretch, go to OIT (Office of Information Technology) to get a Georgia Tech email account, Your.Name@physics.gatech.edu.

  
  
  
  • VERY IMPORTANT: As soon as you get your Social Security Number make sure to give it to OIT (if they do not get it they will close down your account after 40 days, without any further notice!) but also most importantly to OHR.
